How Good is Your Italian?

The online ultrarunning magazine Spirito Trail has an article this month on the 2008 Cascade Crest 100. It's a beautiful-looking piece that features some more of Glenn Tachiyama's lovely photographs -- and it's written entirely in Italian. Give us a holler if you can translate.

IN EUROPE THE PROJECT IS NOW CCC BE IN THE MIND-CHAMPEXCHAMONIX COURMAYEUR,

[RETURN TO ORIGINS]
SPIRITOTRAIL [November 2008] - 24
In the Cascade Crest participants
are just a hundred,
while leaving the square
Courmayeur is now deploys 2500
competitors. If you are overseas
solitude and silence to accompany
falcata of the trailers, here in the old
continent is not uncommon to see
episodes of "code" that prevent the
run. Same is the beauty:
if you are here to walk the balcony
giving the White glaciers, over there
it moves between waterfalls and mountain lakes
with Mount Rainier in the background. Such
is the "rush of entries" although not
reaching the excesses French, even
the Cascade Crest this year
enough two weeks to reach
the maximum number of participants.
The Cascade Mountains are a
mountains of volcanic origin
1100 km long running parallel
to the Pacific coast, going from
Northern California to British
Columbia Canada, crossing
All Oregon and the State of Washington.
The Cascades are part of the Ring of
Fire in the Pacific, a ring of volcanoes
surrounding the Pacific Ocean: the
Unique volcanic eruptions occurred in
territory of the United States have occurred
right here. This geological origin
makes the landscape of the Cascade
Mountains are quite particular:
highest volcanoes dominate the landscape
Location, at an altitude svetta
twice the mountains around.
For example, the Mount Rainier with his
4392 meters, can be safely
observed with the naked eye from 160 km
distance, around since there are other
peaks high enough to prevent
the visual.
The Cascade Crest Classic will run in
High Cascades, in the state of Washington,
a hundred km east of Seattle.
Despite these mountains are
crossed by several railway lines
and highways, most of the area
is still wild and free
traces of human passage. Distance,
and a total climb of land for tender
sometimes make the technical Cascade Crest
one of the toughest races in the panorama
dell'ultratrail North America. The
climate does not help the competitors, because
can go from the cold more intense as
in the 2007 up to temperatures
30 ° as happened in 2006.
The race starts from the town of Easton,
Kittitas County, to return
after 160 km, and especially after
crossed the most beautiful places in the area.
Over 75% of total mileage
is on singletrack trail, which is close to
mountain paths, while only the remaining
25% pass on the most extensive forest roads.
Precisely because of volcanic origin
Cascades as we mentioned earlier,
the race reaches an altitude maximum
only 1780 meters, accumulating
an important height difference
(6,250 meters). Despite the modest
heights reached by competitors, it is not
still rare to find snow on the trails: the
Cascade Mountains are famous
rainfall for much snow
abundant, that even in August
finally dissolved.
The departure is set at 10 am,
an unusual time for un'ultramaratona,
with the specific aim to make it possible
the fastest athletes are forced to
address at least part of the trail
in complete darkness. In the early
ten kilometers competitors cross the John
Wayne Pioneer Trail that leads them to rise
until Goat Peak (Summit Goat), from
you can already observe the entire journey of
race. Arriving at the 16th mile (25 km) to get there
a Blowout Mountain, where the path
the Cascade Crest joins the Pacific
Crest Trail (PCT), the largest trail
American (4000 km!) traveling
the entire Pacific coast, from Canada
down to the sunny beaches California
of San Diego. For the next 50 kilometers,
competitors remain on the Pacific Crest
Trail: This section, though not
a specific marker for
the race is virtually impossible
lost, as the signals to follow
are those of the general PCT. According to
many competitors this part of
race is a real paradise of
trail runner: the ground conditions are
excellent and the corrugated without large
climb or descent too steep, allowing for
run in agility.
Once in the middle of this section arrives
at Stampede Pass, the first big point
refueling of the race, where the majority
Part of competitors sends lamps
Front and clothing they will
need during the night. Stampede is
also the first time gate of the race:
The regulation requires that competitors
use no more than 10 hours and a half
to take these first 52 km. From
Stampede Pass it goes back to Yakima Pass,
where competitors follow the path
leads to Mirror Lake, one of the strengths
of the race. For 5 miles, you run alongside
water of the lake, reflecting the
lights sunset or a starry sky,
Depending on the time in which to get there. To
Olalla Meadows (75th km) the tender leaves
Pacific Crest Trail and addresses the so-called
"Section of the ropes, three km of descent
steep and slippery in which competitors
trying not to slip it by the
rope pulled by the organizers. After
finished down this infamous you enter
in the "Tunnel", another of the characteristics
have announced that the Cascade Crest.
For nearly four km competitors
immerse in a tunnel dug
below a mountain: there is no
lighting and often inside the tunnel is
A dense fog that reflects the light of
front lamps, making them almost
unnecessary. Overcome this difficulty we arrive
Hyak to the rest before the climb
to Keechelus Ridge. From here you deal
Then the long descent that could be
also relaxing if competitors do not
knew that awaits them below the lake
Kachess. In Indian language "Kachess"
wanted to say "Cursed Forest", and is
from the banks of the lake beginning in fact
the "Trail from Hell" (dall'Inferno Trail). Sienna
is a path of just 8 km, in
where there are no significant differences in levels,
but that is characterized by a level
very technical race, with sections
pretty close, which is well ahead
carefully. Even the top runner
take about 90 minutes to travel
all, while others require at least
two and a half hours. Once the
Refreshments of Mineral Crrek missing less than
20 miles to the conclusion, but unfortunately
this is the hardest part also
If the most beautiful race. We need
Indeed tackle the climb toward Mount
Thorp, characterized by the so-called
Cardiac Needles ( "Needles heart"), a
series of short climbs but ripidissime where
it is impossible to run and if you are in crisis
we must pause to take breath. The
altitude profile of this part of the race
looks like an electrocardiogram,
with all those crazy climbs and
many vertiginous descents. The premium
all this effort, however, the views
to the breathtaking Alpine Lakes Wilderness
and to the Stuart Range. From the top of
Mount Thorp missing now 12 miles,
almost all downhill, even if run
with 140 km already in the legs, even
a mere sketch by jogging pace
is a great company. In the last 4 miles
it leaves the path and
falls into civilization coming to Easton
Long-wide forest tracks.
Almost all those who choose to
participate in the Cascade Crest Classic,
they do it because it breathes the atmosphere
which accompanied the origins of
100 miles most famous American. "Here
there is still the magic that thirty years ago
animated the Western States or Leadville
100 "says Kent Holder, a runner of 61
years, which has chosen the CCC as a last
100 miles to close in its beauty
athletic career.
In conclusion, the Cascade Crest Classic
the race is perfect for those in ultratrail
Research genuine inner loneliness,
intense sporting challenge and views
dream. ▼

THE OPINIONS OF COMPETITORS
Judy Carluccio (USA) - 10th in 29h 06 '
In the U.S. there are many 100 miles
I like to run but I chose
the Cascade Crest Classic for his path
scenic wheat and at the same time.
My expectations are not going
disappointed: already the first climb towards Goat
Peak, on a scenic trail over
the group of the Cascades and Mount
Rainier in the background, was worth all the effort
I would have had to face. The Party
most beautiful was, however, the number of Cardiac
Needles and the ascent to Mount Thorpe, with
all those meadows overflowing with yellow flowers and
purple. The top of Mount Thorpe is
Definitely one of the most beautiful places in which they are
ever been.
Joe Lee (USA) - 8th in 23h 35 '
The thirty kilometers from Stampede Pass
leads Olalla Meadows to have been
without doubt my favorite. It crosses
a large valley through a magnificent
mezzacosta path. Below you see
brooks and a multitude of ponds,
and at some point it goes back alongside
a waterfall. The worst point is
certainly the Tunnel: the fog there
is so dense that light the lamp
ends up blinded and is easy to get
panic. The best thing is
pointing the beam of light toward the sides, so as to
you can see at least the walls. When
I exited from the tunnel wet and cold
the stars of the night I have never
seemed so beautiful.
Herb Reeves (USA) - 28h 55 '
The Cascade Crest was my first
100 miles Overall: being one of
considered the toughest races my goal
was just to finish in time limit
32 hours and try to enjoy the most
possible. I fed male in
the first half until tender and refreshment of Olalla
Meadows does not have been able to
eat anything solid. In the second
half I did not have any problem, however,
and incredibly, I found a
overcome competitors in difficult
to climb Mount Thorp. The final time,
despite an error in path
last hours of the race, goes far beyond the
My expectations: without a doubt the next
years will run another 100 miles.
Ben Blessing (USA) - 28h 55 '
The Cascade Crest 100 is so hard to make
Western States seem like a game
boys. I dare say that to me was
a more spiritual and physical.
I also hard to define
has been the hardest part: no
words to describe what has been horrible
the path between Kachess Lake and Mineral
Creek. Brutal, there are no other words
to describe the route. At the end of my
feet were destroyed, but the soul was returned
like new!
